New Rochelle, NY - Iona College baseball head coach Pat Carey named James LaSala '06 as his assistant coach for the 2009 season. LaSala returns to his alma mater after playing two seasons in the New York Yankees minor league system.

"I think James will add a lot to our program," said Carey. "As a former player he has a desire to see Iona succeed and is very loyal and committed to his alma mater."

LaSala appeared in games for both the Gulf Coast and the Staten Island Yankees after being drafted by the organization after the 2006 season. One of the highlights of his tenure included a high-profile bullpen session with Roger Clemens when the righty was preparing for his return to the team in 2007.

At Iona, LaSala appeared in 141 games and recorded 129 hits in 463 at bats. He enjoyed his finest season in Maroon & Gold as a senior, appearing 54 games for the Gaels, a school record he shares with former teammate Paul Salerno. His .330 batting average and 26 RBI ranked second on the team while his 16 doubles led all teammates. During his Iona career he appeared in games at both catcher and the outfielder.

The Gaels return 22 players from last season and welcome the addition of 13 rookies to the lineup in 2009.
