Iona WBB Welcomes Four Newcomers To The Program

TOYOSI ABIOLA

Toyosi Abiola will cross the Atlantic Ocean to become part of Gael nation.  Coming from London, England, Olatayosi Abiola stands at 5’7” and will carry balanced guard play to the Iona background beginning in 2017. 

Citing how Iona College was a great fit for her to further her education, and develop her skills and growth as a player, Olatayosi Abiola brings to the Gaels a wealth of youthful playing experience.  In 2015-16, she played at City of London Academy and for the Southwark Pride AUU program.  In the England National League, she averaged 14 PPG, 4 APG, 6 REB/G, and 1.2 STL/G while leading her team to with both the U18 and Women’s Division 2 National Championship.  She was a top scorer in WEABL averaging 10.1 PPG, and ranked top five in FG% (48.9), and 3PT FG% (31.8%).

JAYDEN EGGLESTON

Jayden Eggleston joins the Iona program after having success playing for Centennial High School and the Vegas Bulldogs, based off of Las Vegas, NV. 

Over the course of her high school career, she earned two USA Today All-Nevada Second Team honors along with Second Team All-State (2015-16), and Third Team All-State recognition (2014-15).  Her team won two consecutive Division I State Championships.  Last season Eggleston was named the MVP of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.

Academically, Eggleston was recognized as a UNLV African-American Scholar.  Additionally, she was named a scholar-athlete as both a junior and sophomore.

When asked why she chose the Maroon & Gold, Eggleston cited how the style of play is appealing and she felt comfortable around all of the coaches and student-athletes.

Eggleston stands at 6’1” and will look to make an immediate impact in the frontcourt in 2017.

REBEKAH JUSTICE

Rebekah Justice comes to New Rochelle, NY after playing at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, OH.  Standing at 6’5”, the coaching staff is excited to see what she’ll bring to the Gael frontcourt when she arrives on campus.

As a freshman at Mariemont, Rebekah Justice earned All-Conference Second Team distinction and All-District honorable mention.  She began her high school career at number 11 on the Cincinnati Top 25 Players to Watch list. 

She made lived up to the expectations, recording her high school’s first ever triple-double.  She ended her rookie year with three triple-doubles, four double-doubles, and 151 blocks.

As a sophomore, Rebekah Justice took home All-Conference Second Team distinction and was once named her team’s Defensive Player of the Year for a second consecutive year.

Last year Rebekah Justice reached All-Conference First Team, All-District First Team, Mercy Health Classic MVP, and most improved player levels.  She doubled-up on her double-double total from her sophomore year, ending her junior season with eight multiple double-digit tallies.

OLIVIA OWENS

Olivia Owens comes to the Maroon & Gold from Sol C. Johnson High School.  Standing at 5’8” coming from her hometown in Woodbridge, VA, Owens will bring a nice 1-2 guard combo play to the Iona backcourt next season. 

After transferring to Savannah , GA, Owens began varsity play as a junior in 2015-16 and immediately had a massive impact.  She brought her team to their first ever final four appearance averaging a double-double during postseason play.  She ended the season averaging 14.2 PPG, receiving First Team accolades as well as All-Academic and Most Valuable Player honors.

In the summer of 2016, Owens played AAU for the Georgia Sting under head coach William Avery.

When asked why she chose to join the Maroon & Gold, she mentioned that the energy and attitude of the coaching staff played a large part: “The positivity and excitement they showed when they talked about the school left me extremely interested. I also really appreciate the confidence they show in me…”
