EDISON, NJ – The 2017 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships begin on Saturday, February 18at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in New York, NY with a 5:30 pm start.
The Iona College track and field program looks to exceed expectations heading into the weekend after being selected fourth on the men’s side and fifth in the women’s rankings according to the Coaches’ Poll released in December. The Gaels go into the Championships on Saturday with five of the best times in the league throughout various events.
Allen enters the Championships with the best time in the conference in the 5,000 meter at 14:22.49, a time he established last Friday at the Fastrack National Invite. The senior is set for the top spot in the second section of the event on Saturday at 9:30 pm. On Sunday, he will be joined by four other Gaels in the second section of the 3,000 meter.
Motschmann leads the group with the second best 3,000 meter time, 8:10.11, in the MAAC this season and will be in the top spot for the second section. He will be joined by Allen, Gilbert Kirui, Jac Hopkins and Kieran Clements in the race. Allen and Kirui join Motschmann with top-five MAAC times in the event.
Liam Dee headlines a contingent of four Maroon & Gold individuals in the mile with a seed time of 4:04.67, the best in the league in front of Mostchmann’s clocking of 4:06.70. Both times were ran at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on January 27. The duo will be joined by Chartt Miller and his sixth best time of 4:11.30 in addition to Thomas McClellan.
Miller is also scheduled to race in both the DMR and 4x400 meter relays along with Ross Wightman. Dee and Calvin Chin join the pair in the 4x400 while Motschmann and Daniel Galvin fill in the opening two legs of the DMR. Wightman is set to join Edward Hayfron on Saturday evening at 7:55 pm in the 800 meter.
Gerom Solis aims to score top-eight points for Iona in the sprint distance events of 60 meter and 200 meter. The freshman owns a 7.10 time in the 60 meter, the third best among this weekend’s competitors, while clocking in at 22.92 during the Mets Indoor Championships in the 200 meter to earn a spot in the first heat.
Garn, Morenaite and Ohrtman will be joined by Danika Jensen at 10:05 pm on Saturday in the women’s DMR race as the quartet owns the best time in the event at 11:58.15. The group put forth the time at the Terrier Invite and hold a two-second margin against Monmouth’s group, the second best effort. Garn rounds out her third event with the 4x400 meter relay on Sunday evening. Jensen and Keenan along with Alexandra Naughton round out the team.
With the third through fifth best MAAC times entering the weekend, Julia Flower, Cassandra Gill and Jessica Scheriff are slated to lead five Gaels in the 5,000 meter race Saturday night. Flower leads the group with a time of 17:20.28, set last weekend at the Fastrack Invite. The freshman returns on Sunday for the 3,000 meter along with Scheriff to lead another group of five individuals for Iona.
