Iona ITF Places 25 Student-Athletes on 2017 MAAC All-Academic Team

EDISON, NJ – A total of 25 student-athletes from the Iona College track and field program were among a total of 282 individuals named to the 2017 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Teams, as announced by the league office today.

The women’s team led the two Maroon & Gold squads with 13 selections, including three-time indoor selection Cassandra Gill. One of two seniors on the list for Iona, the Wyoming, PA native is preparing to earn her degree in information systems. Classmate Kerri Sexton, a computer science major, earned her first appearance on the All-Academic Team.

Eight juniors marked their second All-Academic honor after appearing for the first time as sophomores last indoor season. The group is made up of Rachel Garn, Natalie Holder, Danika Jensen, Daniele Martino, Kara McKenna, Alexandra Naughton, Shannon O’Hehir and Jessica Scheriff. Sophomores Julia Kearley and Helene Kennan joined Sexton as first time recipients.

Graduate student Kieran Clements, a psychology major, along with seniors Chartt Miller, Ryan Sleiman, Kalen Sullivan and Andrew Tario all marked their third All-Academic Team recognition. Tario joins Clemens as a psychology major while doubling in Spanish. Miller, Sleiman and Sullivan are all looking to earn degrees in management, mass communications and biochemistry, respectively.

Juniors Alex Carter, Robert Kirsty, Thomas McClellan and Johannes Mostchmann all notched their second indoor All-Academic team honor. Christian Alberico and Jac Hopkins both joined the indoor list for the first time as sophomores.

To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

Marist placed 57 student-athletes on the two teams, including a shared men’s best of 26 individuals with Rider. Quinnipiac paced the women’s side with 33 representatives, edging the Red Foxes by two. Monmouth came in third on both sides with a total of 47 student-athletes, 29 women and 18 men.

The 2017 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships begins on Saturday, February 18at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in New York, NY. The two-day event begins with the Women’s Mile Trials and is set to start at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
