KAMPALA, UGANDA - Iona College cross country alum Leonard Korir finished 20th among a field of 132 finishers to help Team USA to a fifth place showing in the Senior Men's Race at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships this past Sunday in Kampala.
Korir raced to a 29:36 finish to earn 20th and become the second member of Team USA across the finish line behind an 11th place clocking of 29:12 for Samuel Chelanga. Teammate Shadrack Kipchirchir finished in the next spot behind Korir with a 29:44 finish.
The trio helped Team USA accumulate 78 points, three shy of fourth place Eritrea (75) and six points behind Uganda (72) in third place. Ethiopia (21 points) edged out Kenya (22) for a third straight Team Gold while Geoffrey Kamworor defended his individual title from 2015 with a finish of 28:24. The finish for Team USA was the best since a second place finish in 2013 after ranking seventh in 2015.
