SHELTON, CT - The Iona College men's rowing program opened up their season competing in the Head of the Housatonic competition in Shelton, Connecticut.
THe varsity eight hit the water rowing this fall and has been training with purpose picking up where the freshman eight left off last year. The young varsity placed 9th posting a time of 14:50.2 in a field of 16 this weekend against the toughest competition this regatta has ever seen. Boston College, last year’s winner of the ACRA B final, won the event in 13:42.9. West Point, who reached the Dad Vail grand final a year ago, took the silver medal while the Coast Guard Academy rounded out the top-three. The Gaels rowed a consistent race and are eager to see where their training will take them.

Later in the day the eight broke down into two fours and raced to mixed results.  The ‘A’ crew finished eighth with a time of 15.50.9 while the ‘B’ crew finished a surprising 16th in 16:50.5.  For seven of the eight men, it was their second trip down the course while freshman Steve Quirino joined the ‘A’ crew to make his Gaels debut

“I’m pleased with the results overall this weekend.”, said men’s coach John Boyd.  “Everyone had a solid performance and are starting to believe in their potential. In this sport the work is never over.  There’s always more speed to be found. The guys have proven to be up to the challenge.”

Iona will compete again at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia on 10/29.  The competition will be even better for the Varsity. Two novice eights will be selected to make their collegiate debut as well.
