NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Six teams from within the Iona College Athletic Department were honored on Wednesday as recipients of NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
The six Iona programs that received the honor include baseball, men's track & field, softball, women's lacrosse, women's rowing and women's volleyball. This marks the second straight year of recognition for baseball, men's track & field, women's rowing and women's volleyball.
All eleven MAAC schools had at least one team that posted multi-year APR's in the top 10% of all squads in each sport. Siena College led all MAAC institutions with eight teams. Following Siena, with six teams represented is Fairfield University, Iona and Marist College. Additionally, Men's Golf and Women's Cross Country programs led all MAAC sports with five recipients each.
Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, similar to a report card. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention, and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 10.
