Iona Hosts First Ever CHOICES Tailgate
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the first annual CHOICES Tailgate on Friday February 24th prior to the highly anticipated men’s basketball Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rivalry game against Manhattan College.
Across all 11 MAAC schools throughout the entirety of the 2016-17 basketball season, every institution’s SAAC partook in hosting an advisory tailgate to inform the student body about the harms and effects of alcohol and the bystander affect. This is a part of the CHOICES initiative, centered on healthy choices and alcohol awareness.
These Tailgates are headed by BJ Merriam, the Director of Compliance & Student Athlete Services for the MAAC. Throughout the year, Iona SAAC has been tweeting facts about alcohol and its dangers in anticipation for the event. While these tweets were aimed at student-athletes, many also applied to the student body as a whole.
At the tailgate, all students were able to play games and gain important knowledge in how alcohol can affect their everyday life. There were multiple Iona SAAC members that volunteered at the Tailgate to help it be as successful as it was.
Among the volunteers was Iona SAAC President Katie Newton. Newton stated “I was very pleased with the number of students that came to the event. Alcohol can be a hard topic to discuss on college campuses across the nation. With games and initiatives like this, it makes the topic easier to discuss. We were able to have fun and play games with many students at Iona and I look forward to see this event continued year to year!”
