On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Iona College baseball team participated in the "Make a Difference Week" Kick Ball Kick-Off
game with the Success Center Children and the Best Buddies of New York.
SUCCESS is the acronym for
"Students United in a Community Center for Educational Success." The Success Center
on campus is a center that provides elementary school students with a positive
atmosphere that encourages a sense of self-worth and achievement. College
mentors work on an individual basis with the students to develop a relationship
that ensures learning. The Success Center
is an after school homework help program sponsored by Iona's
Center for Campus Ministries and the generous financial support of the Con Ed
Corporation.
Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated
to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for
one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for
people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver,
Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one
original chapter to more than 1,500 college, high school and middle school
campuses across the country and internationally.
Players from the baseball team partnered up with the success
center children and the best buddies and played a fun game of kickball. They laughed and encouraged their team
members making the event a great experience for everyone who participated. Lots
of great prizes were raffled off, great performances, food, drinks, and a great
time. Not only did the baseball team
take part in the service but so too did the pipers, the cheerleaders, the dance
team, the choir and many other members of the Iona and New Rochelle Community. The kickball game was a success and a great
way to end off Make a Difference Week.
