CINCINNATI, OH – An 11-goal second-half offensive outburst led the Iona College lacrosse team to a 21-13 victory over Big East member Cincinnati on St. Patrick’s Day at Nippert Stadium.
Iona (5-2) was led by incredible offensive performances by seniors Emily Taddei and Casey Scully with 10 of the 21 Iona goals. Both scored five goals each as Scully added four of her five tallies in the second half. Junior Kylie Gregory continues to shine this season adding four goals in the win.
Freshman Meghan Testoni added a pair of goals and junior Brittney Mabus, sophomores Brenna Lade, Nina Veneziale and Kristen Flynn along with freshman Olivia McCarthy all scored single tallies for the Gales. Mabus, Gregory, Lade and Testoni all added assists with Mabus and Gregory dishing out a pair.
The bearcats took a quick 6-1 lead to start the contest before Iona began a mini run and cut the lead in half 6-3 on a free position shot by Taddei. The visitors tied the game 7-7 scoring four consecutive goals by Mabus, Testoni, Lade and Gregory. Both squads traded goals heading into the half as Taddei tied the game with 2:26 remaining.
Iona took a two-goal lead and the last lead change on a Gregory tally with 23:07 remaining. The Maroon & Gold finished the game on a 7-1 run with tallies Scully, Taddei, Gregory and McCarthy
Cincinnati (3-3) was led by Rachel Mercier with five points on four goals and an assists. Laura Simanski led the team with five goals on five shots. Jennifer Walsh made five saves in the loss.
Iona sophomore netminder Maria Ortiz made seven saves for the victory, as Iona outshot the Bearcats 31-24 over the contest, including 9-10 from free position shots.
Iona will return back home on March 27 against Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
