NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior Casey Scully tied her career-high with five goals as the Iona College lacrosse team tied a program best securing their eighth victory of the season against MAAC foe Marist College 11-3 on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Freshman Meghan Testoni finished second on the team with two goals. Junior Brittney Mabus added a pair of assist and classmate Kylie Gregory had a goal and an assist. Senior Emily Taddei, sophomore Brenna Lade and freshman Olivia McCarthy also scored for Iona in the win.
The Gaels controlled play the entire way and finished with a 32-21 edge in shots. The hosts were nearly-perfect on clear attempts, completing 17-18 and going perfect in the second half 10-10. The Gaels also scored three free-position shots, two in the first half and one in the second.
Sophomore netminder Maria Ortiz won her sixth game of the season making 12 saves, six in both periods.
Iona (8-5, 2-1 MAAC) scored the first four goals of the game with tallies from Scully, Gregory and a pair from Testoni. After a goal from Marist, Scully completed her hat trick to give the Maroon & Gold a 6-1 lead.
Iona was held off the scoreboard for the next 30 minutes of play until scoring at the 9:28 mark of the second half off a shot by Taddei. The Gaels added two more goals from Scully and McCarthy before Lade and the fifth goal by Scully with one second remaining gave Iona their second conference win of the year.
Ashley Miller led Marist (2-11, 1-2 MAAC) with two goals and netminder Ashley Casiano made 13 saves but was dealt the loss.
Iona will play two of their final three games this season on the road beginning with a trip up to Siena on Saturday at noon and then Manhattan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
