Pat Carey enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Iona College baseball team. He was hired as the fifth head coach in program history in July 2005.
Though the Gaels struggled on the field in their first season under coach Carey, he has rededicated his players their intensity on both the diamond and in the classroom. In the 2006 fall semester, the baseball team achieved a 3.08 GPA, the first time in program history that the squad has surpassed the 3.00 level. The academic success continued through his first three seasons in New Rochelle.
The 2009 squad features a solid recruiting class and will see a young squad take the diamond for the Gaels.
Carey came to New Rochelle after spending the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Fordham University. The Rams enjoyed one of their finest seasons in almost a decade with Carey on the staff, making an appearances in the Atlantic-10 Baseball Championship tournament, while posting a 34-17 record.
The 20-year old native of Stony Point, NY began his collegiate coaching career at Rockland Community College. After serving as an assistant coach for three years, Carey took over the program in 2003. In his two seasons at the helm, RCC posted a record of 44-28 (.611), while capturing the Mid-Hudson Conference and ABCA Region XV Championships twice. In 2003, his squad cracked the NJCAA Division II Top 30 National Poll and, in 2004, began the season ranked #12 on the Preseason National Poll. For his efforts, Carey was named the ABCA Region XV Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004.
As a student-athlete, Carey excelled at Rockland Community College from 1994-96, earning Mid-Hudson Conference Player of the Year honors in 1996 before matriculating to Providence College. He was PC's starting shortstop from 1996-98 and is the career Big East Tournament batting leader (.667).
Carey also had plenty of success at the high school level. Starring for North Rockland High School, Carey was the USA Today New York State Player of the Year runner-up and The Journal News Player of the Year in 1994. He played on three New York State Class A Championship teams at North Rockland from 1992 to 1994, and was twice named All-County and All-League.
